I’ve Never Seen My Grandkids Ignore Their Screens — Until This Game

They come over, the tablets come out, and the visit disappears. Then my daughter hung a game on our playroom wall — and nobody has asked for a screen since.

You know the routine. They arrive, hugs all around, and within ten minutes everyone is on a device. You ask if they want to do something. “In a minute.” The minute never comes.

I’m not anti-screen. I just didn’t want to spend the only afternoon I get with them sitting three feet away from the top of their heads.

What Actually Happened

It’s a game — six feet wide and three feet tall, covered in hundreds of tiny hidden things to find: ships, presidents, landmarks, oddities. My daughter hung it at kid height and said nothing about it.

The seven-year-old spotted it first. Then his sister. Then, somehow, both of them were standing there with markers, arguing about who found the hot air balloon.

Forty minutes. Nobody looked for a tablet.

And then my grandson asked me what the Gold Rush was. So I got to tell him.

That’s the part I wasn’t expecting. It isn’t just that they put the screens down — it’s that they come find you, because you’re the one who knows what all these things are.

What It Is

The World’s Greatest Search & Discover — USA Edition: a 6ft × 3ft illustrated map of America with more than 500 hidden things to find — real history, landmarks and culture tucked into every state.

The surface is dry-erase, so they circle what they find, wipe it clean, and start over. It’s made in the USA, it arrives ready to hang, and it’s rated for ages 6 to 96 — which, I can confirm, is accurate on both ends.
